BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday for the state-of-the-art K-9 Junny Animal Medical Center, located next to the Animal Care Center in Melbourne.
The K-9 Junny Animal Surgery Center houses the latest surgery and medical technology for dogs and cats in our care at the Animal Care Center.
The facility was designed by Dr. Sarah Boyd, Director of Veterinary Medicine; Animal Services Director Joe Hellebrand; and the veterinary team, Erik Costin of W&J Construction and Travis Kerr of J. Travis Kerr Architecture.
“This was an incredible morning for me and our community as we held the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for our brand new K9 Junny’s Animal Medical Center,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey.
“As everyone probably already knows, this project holds a special place in my heart as it is not only named after my beloved best friend, K-9 Junny but also tells the story of Junny Rios-Martinez, Junny’s namesake, who was abducted and murdered in 1991.”
Made possible through public funds and private donations from Vicki Shepard and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Pet Posse, this state-of-the-art medical facility allows the vet team to provide the absolute best care possible to the homeless pets at the Animal Care Center.

“Today was an amazing day for the health and well-being of pets in our community, and it would not have been possible without the help and commitment of so many,” Sheriff Ivey said.
“I want to personally thank everyone who made this project come to life, as it is more than we could have ever imagined here in Brevard County. And, of course, a huge “thank you” to my partner Junny as the K9 Junny’s Animal Medical Center will forever honor your work as an Ambassador for children and pets in our community!”
Currently, the veterinary staff at the Brevard County Animal Care Center conducts thousands of surgeries each year in a small surgery room that is less than 500 square feet.
The new facility not only significantly expands the surgery area but also brings in the latest in technology including radiology, ultrasound, and lab facilities.
“While Junny has always been lucky enough to have someone who loves him and an incredible team of doctors to care for him, not every pet in our community is as fortunate,” said Sheriff Ivey.
“With that in mind, the concept for our new medical facility was created, giving our team every tool they need to provide exceptional care to every pet that comes through our doors.”
