With a robust educational background, including a law degree from the University of Münster and an MBA from Providence College, Nuehlen’s career spans over two decades in the aviation industry.
He has leveraged his expertise to build successful firms like Blueberry Xpress Deutschland and expand operations globally. The following is an insightful Q&A with Nuehlen, providing an in-depth look into his professional journey and the valuable lessons he has learned along the way.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Christian Nuehlen to discuss his career journey, leadership philosophy, and insights into the ever-evolving world of aviation finance.
What does a typical day look like for you at AFG Ireland, and how do you ensure it remains productive?
I prefer to follow a structured schedule to stay focused and maintain a high level of productivity. My daily routine consists of:
- Strategic Decision-Making – Overseeing aircraft trading operations, financing, and lease & purchase agreements.
- Client & Partner Engagement – Communicating with airlines, financial institutions, manufacturers, and leasing companies.
- Legal & Compliance Oversight – Applying my legal background to ensure regulatory and contractual compliance together with AFG’s legal team.
- Team Leadership & Management – Guiding AFG’s operations and leading employees.
- Industry Engagement – Attending aviation conferences, publishing articles, and delivering guest lectures on aviation law.
- Global Operations Management – Coordinating with AFG’s offices and partners globally.
How do you stay informed about the latest trends and developments in financial services and investment management?
I deploy several different strategies:
- Industry Publications & Research – I enjoy reading and contributing to financial and aviation trade journals.
- Professional Associations – As a member of ISTAT and the German-American Lawyers Association, I engage with industry peers and access exclusive reports and insights.
- Networking & Conferences – I frequently speak at international aviation conferences, which keeps me updated on market trends, regulatory changes, and technological advancements.
- Guest Lecturing & Academic Involvement – My role as a guest lecturer at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences allows me to stay connected to academic research and emerging trends.
- Consulting & Business Operations – Through AFG and my previous consultancy, Blueberry Xpress, I stay directly involved in real-world financial transactions.
- Global Market Presence – With experience in Germany, Singapore, and the US, I monitor regional financial developments to optimize AFG’s strategy.
Can you share a significant challenge you’ve faced in your career and how you navigated through it?
My career trajectory has included various ups and downs. For example, after Aero Lloyd German Airlines ceased operations in 2003, I transitioned to XL Airways Germany, where I served as a management board member and general counsel. This move reflects my resilience and ability to adapt. Additionally, founding Blueberry Xpress Deutschland in 2007 and later Aircraft Finance Germany in 2017 demonstrates my proactive approach to addressing market needs and seizing new opportunities.
What is your approach when starting a new investment or business project?
My approach involves a combination of strategic planning, risk assessment, and industry expertise:
- Market Research & Industry Insights – Analyzing market trends, aircraft demand, and financial conditions.
- Risk Management & Legal Due Diligence – Conducting thorough legal and regulatory assessments.
- Strategic Partnerships & Networking – Collaborating with airlines, lessors, banks, and manufacturers.
- Financial Structuring & Investment Feasibility – Assessing financing options, leasing structures, and return on investment.
- Execution & Growth Strategy – Implementing structured expansion plans, as seen in AFG’s growth.
What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?
Letting people go is always difficult for me. Recently, I had to cancel contracts with two AFG team members for poor performance. This was especially hard because both individuals were good people, and I am fond of both of them. However, as Ray Dalio says, sometimes you have to part ways with people—even the ones you like.
Reflecting on your career, was there a job or experience that was particularly difficult, and what key lessons did you take from it?
One of the most challenging periods was during my early years in aviation law and finance at Aero Lloyd. When the airline ceased operations, I had to seek new opportunities. Key lessons from this experience include:
- Adaptability & Industry Knowledge – Staying informed and flexible is critical in aviation finance.
- Strategic Decision-Making – Moving from legal advisory roles to executive leadership taught me how to structure financial deals and lead in a competitive market.
- Networking & Relationship Building – Connecting with financial institutions, lessors, and airlines has been key to my success.
- Balancing Risk & Innovation – Founding AFG allowed me to identify market gaps and create innovative financing solutions.
Tell us about a skill you’ve developed on your own. How did you go about mastering it?
One skill I developed on my own is combining legal expertise with financial acumen in aviation transactions. While I trained as a lawyer, I deliberately worked to master aircraft finance, leasing, and investment structuring.
- Transition from Law to Aviation Finance – My early career in Aero Lloyd’s legal department gave me a foundation in aviation regulations. At XL Airways Germany, I worked closely with financial institutions and investors.
- Practical Experience & Consulting – Founding Blueberry Xpress allowed me to structure financial deals, assess risks, and optimize leasing agreements.
- Global Expansion & Deal Structuring – Expanding Blueberry Xpress to Singapore in 2011 and later launching AFG in 2017 allowed me to handle large-scale transactions.
- Continuous Learning & Industry Engagement – My work as a guest lecturer and my membership in ISTAT help me stay at the forefront of aviation finance.
