BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Mayor Rob Medina has announced that the 2025 Palm Bay Mayor’s Ball will be held at the Hilton Rialto in Melbourne on June 28.
The Mayor’s Ball will benefit the Space Coast Discovery non-profit.
Since 1987, Space Coast Discovery, a non-profit infant-through-primary school, has been a cornerstone of education in Brevard County.
Initially serving special needs and typically developing students, the school now focuses almost exclusively on children with special needs because of its expertise and increasing community needs.
The school serves children with developmental challenges such as autism, dyslexia, Down syndrome, ADHD, bipolar disorder, physical movement challenges, and limited vision, hearing, or speech capabilities.
Many students face overlapping challenges, highlighting the school’s vital community role.
Currently, Space Coast Discovery serves 138 students, equally split between the Palm Bay and Melbourne areas, with a similarly balanced representation among our 54-member staff.
The school provides a child-centered curriculum tailored to individual needs, blending traditional academics with life skills training and therapies like speech, physical, occupational, or behavioral therapy as prescribed.
A 1-to-5 staff-to-student ratio ensures personalized attention to help students progress at their own pace, fostering academic and social development while empowering them toward independence.

Looking ahead, Space Coast Discovery is expanding to meet demand. A new facility with three classrooms will open in January 2025, accommodating 40 additional students.
Long-term plans include a state-of-the-art 30,000-square-foot facility dedicated in memory of long-time supporters Tim and Stacy Wakefield and a science center to integrate STEM education.
These initiatives align with the school’s vision to serve students from infancy through 12th grade, emphasizing a traditional education coupled with hands-on learning tailored to children with special needs.
With 37 years of service, multiple School Choice Leadership Awards, and APPLE Accreditation, Space Coast Discovery remains a beacon of hope in Brevard County. It combines innovative education, life skills training, and a supportive community to help students thrive academically and socially.
All sponsorships should be in check or money order form, made out to the Palm Bay Municipal Foundation, attn: City Manager’s Office, 120 Malabar Road SE Palm Bay. Cocktail attire is requested.
