BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell will be making a tour of several North Brevard campuses to personally greet students and staff as Brevard Public Schools opens its doors to students on Monday, August 11.

Marking the official start of the 2025–2026 academic year, the day promises an atmosphere filled with anticipation and excitement as families, educators, and students come together to begin a new chapter of learning.

His visits aim to capture the energy, connection, and optimism that traditionally define the first day of school.

The morning will begin at 6 a.m. with a stop at the Bus Depot North, followed by a 7:30 a.m. visit to Pinewood Elementary School.

At 8 a.m., Dr. Rendell will head to Astronaut High School before concluding his tour at Madison Middle School at 9 a.m.

Each visit will serve as an opportunity to highlight the sense of community and shared purpose that sets the tone for a successful school year ahead.

Brevard Public Schools is one of the largest in Florida, ranking among the top 50 largest school districts in the United States, and serves a student population of more than 70,000 across a wide range of communities, from rural inland areas to beachside cities and suburban neighborhoods.

Brevard Public Schools traces its origins back to the late 19th century, with small community schools eventually consolidating into a unified countywide district.

The district is governed by a five-member elected School Board, with members representing specific geographic districts within the county. The board sets policy, approves budgets, and hires the superintendent, who oversees day-to-day operations. BPS is funded through a combination of local property taxes, state funding allocations, and federal grants.

BPS operates more than 80 educational facilities, including:

■ Elementary Schools: Over 50 campuses serving grades Pre-K through 6.

■ Middle Schools: Several standalone middle schools for grades 7–8, though some elementary schools operate as K–8 centers.

■ High Schools: More than a dozen high schools serving grades 9–12, many with advanced academic programs and career academies.

■ Specialty and Magnet Programs: Schools such as Edgewood Jr./Sr. High and West Shore Jr./Sr. Both institutions are nationally recognized for academic excellence and admit students through competitive selection processes.

■ Alternative Education: Programs for students needing non-traditional learning environments, including virtual school options and credit recovery programs.

BPS is known for maintaining strong ties to the local aerospace industry. Several schools have STEM-focused magnet programs, often partnering with NASA, SpaceX, Blue Origin, and other companies to offer hands-on learning in engineering, robotics, and space science.

Brevard Public Schools consistently ranks high in statewide academic performance measures. The district offers:

■ Advanced Placement (AP) and Cambridge AICE courses in many high schools.

■ International Baccalaureate (IB) programs at select schools.

■ Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways in areas like aerospace technology, health sciences, engineering, culinary arts, and digital design.

■ Gifted Education services for qualifying students in all grade levels.

■ Exceptional Student Education (ESE) programs for students with disabilities.

■ Dual Enrollment partnerships with Eastern Florida State College, allowing students to earn college credits while completing high school.

BPS also emphasizes early literacy, STEM integration, and arts education, with music, theater, and visual arts programs available at many schools.

Performance and Recognition: The Florida Department of Education frequently recognizes Brevard Public Schools as an A-Rated District, a status earned through high graduation rates, strong standardized test scores, and significant student growth metrics. Several schools within the district have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools and appear in national rankings for academic excellence.

Community and Extracurricular Activities: The district supports a vibrant extracurricular scene, including competitive athletics, academic clubs, performing arts, student government, and service organizations. Sports programs span middle and high schools, with opportunities in football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, track, and more. Many schools have strong traditions in marching band, chorus, and theater productions.

Community Impact: Brevard Public Schools plays a central role in the county’s economy and culture. It is one of the largest employers in the region, with thousands of teachers, administrators, and support staff. The district’s partnerships with local businesses, higher education institutions, and nonprofit organizations help prepare students for careers in high-demand fields, particularly in aerospace, engineering, healthcare, and information technology.
