BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Grandparents’ Day, observed on the first Sunday after Labor Day, falls this year on Sunday, September 7.

The occasion serves as a poignant reminder of the vital role grandparents play in the lives of their families, offering an opportunity to honor the love, guidance, and wisdom they share.

For Julie Mallak, being a grandmother to three grandchildren has brought immeasurable joy and fulfillment. She reflects on the unique privilege of this role, one that blends life experience with a special kind of love.

To her, grandparenting is not only about offering support and sharing traditions, but also about embracing the lighter and playful moments that come with spending time with grandchildren.

Mallak treasures the memories she and her husband have made with their grandchildren. From shopping for a prom dress with Vicky to cheering on Veronica at lacrosse games to caring for their youngest grandson, Luke, who is just two years old, each experience has added a new layer of meaning to their daily lives.

Retirement, she notes, has given them the time and freedom to fully embrace these moments in ways that were not possible while raising their own children during busy working years.

Living on the Space Coast has also provided opportunities for the family to explore and share experiences, from visiting the beach and museums to enjoying cultural events and educational outings.

In addition to these activities, Mallak and her husband participate in a monthly gathering at Holy Name of Jesus Parish, where grandparents come together to pray the Rosary for the well-being and future of their grandchildren.

She considers grandparenting both a blessing and a responsibility, a role that enriches her life while deepening family bonds. Grandparents’ Day, while celebrated once a year, serves as a broader reminder of the lasting impact grandparents have on shaping family traditions and nurturing the generations to come.
