FORT PIERCE, FLORIDA — An illegal alien semi truck driver has been charged with homicide after a horrific crash on the Florida Turnpike last week that claimed the lives of three people when a minivan collided with a tractor-trailer that had attempted an illegal U-turn across the highway, authorities said.

The wreck occurred around 3 p.m. Tuesday near Fort Pierce when a tractor-trailer driven by Harjinder Singh, 30, suddenly turned left across the northbound lanes and tried to cross the median through a restricted “official use only” access point.

Authorities said Singh entered the country illegally and obtained a commercial driver’s license in California.

Singh, who appeared totally unmoved and expressionless in video footage before and after the crash, was taken into custody at the scene and has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide.

Federal authorities confirmed that Singh has been living in the U.S. illegally since entering from Mexico in 2018, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer.

Dash camera video from the truck showed a black minivan approaching at full speed, with no opportunity to swerve or stop. The van struck the side of the trailer head-on and became wedged beneath it.

Photos from the scene released by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office show the van crushed and torn open, with debris scattered across the highway.

Emergency crews used heavy equipment to lift the trailer and recover the victims.

Two passengers died at the scene. The driver was pulled from the wreckage alive but later died at a nearby hospital. Authorities identified the victims as a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach, a 30-year-old man from Florida City, and a 54-year-old man from Miami.

Their names have not yet been released pending notification of family members.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
