OREM, Utah — Conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was shot Wednesday during a scheduled appearance at Utah Valley University, according to his spokesperson.
“Charlie Kirk has been shot at Utah Valley University. Condition unknown,” the spokesperson said in a statement. He was transported to a local hospital, though details about the extent of his injuries were not immediately available.
Kirk, 31, had been slated to speak at UVU as part of his American Comeback Tour, a multi-state series of events aimed at energizing young conservative voters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. He is also scheduled to appear later this month at Utah State University.
The Orem Police Department confirmed an incident took place on campus around the time of Kirk’s scheduled event but did not release further details about a suspect, motive, or how the shooting unfolded. Officers secured the venue and students were briefly placed on lockdown before the scene was declared safe.
Witnesses reported chaos in the auditorium, with attendees rushing for the exits after shots rang out. Several students described seeing Kirk on stage just moments before the gunfire erupted.
Kirk, a nationally recognized conservative figure, has long drawn both fervent supporters and outspoken critics. His planned Utah stops had already sparked petitions and protests from student groups who accused him of promoting divisive rhetoric.
Utah Valley University released a brief statement expressing concern and confirming that the campus community’s safety remains its top priority. “Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragic event,” the university said.
National political leaders and conservative organizations quickly reacted to the news on social media, offering prayers and calls for accountability. Turning Point USA, the nonprofit Kirk founded in 2012, said it was “devastated by the violence” and would provide updates on his condition as they became available.
As of Wednesday afternoon, authorities had not confirmed whether a suspect was in custody.
