BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The National Hurricane Center is closely monitoring a tropical wave in the eastern tropical Atlantic that has shown increased signs of development.

The disturbance, located a few hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, continues to generate disorganized showers and thunderstorms as it moves westward.

Forecasters say environmental conditions remain favorable for further organization over the next several days.

A tropical depression could form by late this week or over the weekend as the system tracks west to west-northwest at around 15 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the system was given a 40 percent chance of development within the next 48 hours and a high 80 percent chance over the next seven days.

Residents in the Caribbean and surrounding regions are advised to monitor updates closely, as the system could strengthen and pose a threat heading into next week.
