King Charles III has officially stripped his younger brother, Prince Andrew, above, of all royal titles and privileges, Buckingham Palace announced Thursday, marking a historic and decisive move within the British monarchy.

LONDON — King Charles III has officially stripped his younger brother, Prince Andrew, of all royal titles and privileges, Buckingham Palace announced Thursday, marking a historic and decisive move within the British monarchy.

The 65-year-old royal will no longer hold the title of prince or be addressed as “His Royal Highness.” Going forward, he will be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, according to the official statement from the palace.

“His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the style, titles and honours of Prince Andrew,” the statement read. “Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.”

The decision means the former Duke of York also loses the honors of the Order of the Garter and Knight Grand Cross of the Victorian Order, as well as his long-held residence at Royal Lodge, which he has occupied for more than two decades.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that a formal notice has been served for him to vacate the property and relocate to private accommodations.

The announcement follows renewed public scrutiny of Andrew’s past ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Although Andrew has consistently denied any allegations of wrongdoing, palace sources said the King’s decision reflects “serious lapses of judgment” that have damaged the institution’s integrity.

“Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies remain with the victims and survivors of all forms of abuse,” the palace added.

King Charles exercised his Royal Prerogative — a constitutional right that allows the sovereign to manage royal titles without parliamentary approval — in making the decision. Senior members of the royal family, including Prince William, are said to have supported the move.

The stripping of Andrew’s titles marks the first time in over a century that a member of the royal family has been formally deprived of honors. The last occurred under the Titles Deprivation Act of 1917, when Prince Ernest Augustus lost his titles for aligning with Germany during World War I.

Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, retain their royal titles under existing royal patent laws, as they are the children of a son of a sovereign.

This latest development follows years of fallout from Andrew’s association with Epstein. In 2019, he stepped down from royal duties after a controversial BBC interview failed to quell public outrage. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II stripped him of his military titles and royal patronages following a civil lawsuit filed by Virginia Giuffre, an Epstein victim. Andrew settled that case out of court without admitting liability.

The royal family’s latest decision effectively closes the chapter on Andrew’s public royal life, relegating him to private citizenship for the first time in his life.
