Mathers Bridge Stuck Closed to Boats After Dual System Failures

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Boating traffic at the historic Mathers Bridge has been brought to a standstill after mechanical and electrical failures halted the bridge’s ability to open and close, Brevard County officials announced Sunday.

The trouble began Saturday when a key mechanical support system failed while the 700-foot swing bridge was in the open position. Technicians were able to return the bridge to its closed position, allowing vehicle traffic to resume, but boating access remains shut down.

County crews worked through the night Saturday and continued troubleshooting efforts into Sunday.

However, while attempting repairs, an additional electrical system failure occurred, further complicating the situation. Officials say the bridge will remain closed to marine traffic until new electrical components arrive and can be installed.

“There is currently no timetable on how soon that might occur,” county officials said, noting that repair schedules will depend on the availability and delivery of the necessary parts.

Mathers Bridge, first opened in 1927, is a well-used and beloved connection between South Tropical Trail at the southern tip of Merritt Island and Banana River Drive in Indian Harbour Beach.

Its low clearance and swing design make it essential for marine navigation in the Banana River, particularly for sailboats and taller vessels that rely on bridge openings to pass.

For now, boaters will need to seek alternative routes as crews continue to assess the extent of the electrical and mechanical problems. Vehicle traffic is not currently affected.
