A Legacy of Reliability at Melbourne PD

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne Police Department is paying tribute to Jim Nickelson for nearly three decades of dedicated service, honoring his 27-year commitment to the City of Melbourne and the vital role he played in keeping the department operating smoothly behind the scenes.
Throughout his tenure, Nickelson supported the police department through both the everyday demands of public safety and the complex challenges that come with maintaining a modern law enforcement facility.
His work was especially critical at the Joseph Pellicano Law Enforcement Center, a sprawling public safety complex that requires constant upkeep to remain fully functional and ready to support officers and staff around the clock.
Department leaders say Nickelson was instrumental in maintaining and improving the facility, overseeing everything from major infrastructure projects to the countless small repairs that often go unnoticed but are essential to daily operations.
“Jim has been absolutely instrumental in helping the Melbourne Police Department, especially with the endless needs, fixes, and challenges that come with the new Joseph Pellicano Law Enforcement Center,” MPD said in a statement.
“From big projects to the small details that keep everything running smoothly, Jim has always been there for our officers, staff, and the entire city. We are so grateful for all you’ve done, Jim. Enjoy your well-earned retirement. You’ll be missed, but never forgotten.”

Coworkers described Nickelson as a dependable and tireless problem-solver, known for being ready at a moment’s notice to address issues — whether large or small — to ensure the department never missed a beat.
His attention to detail and commitment to excellence earned him widespread respect not only within the police department but throughout the City of Melbourne.
While his work often took place outside the public spotlight, colleagues emphasized that Nickelson’s impact was felt every single day. The reliable systems, safe working conditions, and functional facilities officers depend on were in no small part due to his dedication.
As Nickelson steps into retirement, the department says his influence and contributions will remain a lasting part of the agency’s success.
Though he leaves behind big shoes to fill, MPD says his legacy is firmly cemented in the foundation of the department he helped build and maintain for more than a quarter-century.
For Melbourne police officers and city staff alike, Nickelson’s departure marks the end of an era — and the beginning of a well-deserved chapter of rest after a career defined by service, reliability, and quiet leadership.
