Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons Will Protect Pedestrians on Busy U.S. 192 Corridor

PHBs can reduce pedestrian-related crashes by up to 55 percent

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Pedestrians traveling along U.S. 192 can expect safer crossings early next year following the installation of new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHBs) throughout the busy corridor, according to the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization.
The safety upgrades, anticipated to be activated in early 2026, are designed to help people cross high-speed roadways more safely and are part of ongoing efforts to reduce pedestrian crashes.
Transportation officials say PHBs can reduce pedestrian-related crashes by up to 55 percent, making them among the most effective tools available to improve roadway safety.
The newly installed beacons will be operational at several key locations along U.S. 192, including:
■ Pearl Street and Circle Drive
■ Haven Drive and Campbell Drive
■ Wawa Way
■ Bry Lynn Drive
■ Palm Boulevard
Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons are activated when a pedestrian pushes the crossing button. Once activated, the beacon alerts drivers to stop, allowing pedestrians to cross during the designated WALK signal.
Officials are reminding pedestrians to push the button, wait for the WALK signal to appear, and ensure traffic has come to a complete stop before entering the crosswalk.
Drivers are also urged to understand how the new signals work. When the beacon displays a solid red light, motorists must stop and remain stopped while pedestrians are crossing. If the light is flashing red, drivers may proceed with caution only after ensuring the crosswalk is completely clear.
The Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization encourages both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert and patient as everyone becomes familiar with the new safety features. Officials say the improvements are a significant step toward creating safer, more walkable corridors across Brevard County.
