BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The West Melbourne Police Department continues to prioritize the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists, recognizing that crashes involving these vulnerable road users are significantly more likely to result in serious or fatal injuries.

Beginning in August 2025, the department launched targeted High Visibility Enforcement operations along the US-192 corridor.

These efforts have been focused on increasing public awareness and promoting safer behaviors among all who use West Melbourne roadways.

This corridor has been identified as one of the most critical areas in Brevard County due to a high number of crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists that result in severe or fatal outcomes.

Since the start of these operations, officers have achieved the following:
• 101 bicyclist contacts
• 384 pedestrian contacts
• 961 motorist contacts
• 24 bicycle lights distributed

These proactive enforcement and education efforts are aimed at reducing dangerous behaviors and encouraging voluntary compliance with traffic laws.

Brevard County continues to rank among the top 25 counties in Florida for crashes involving serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Initiatives like HVE play a key role in addressing this issue by combining enforcement with community engagement to improve overall roadway safety.

This initiative is funded through a partnership with the University of North Florida’s Institute of Police Technology and Management and the Florida Department of Transportation’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Focused Initiative.

This statewide program supports agencies in enhancing pedestrian and bicycle safety through funding for officer overtime, specialized training, and education on Florida traffic laws and best practices.
