Fire officials report that wildfire risk is rising due to increasingly dry conditions, prompting the department to strategically position equipment throughout the city and operate in a heightened state of readiness.

Beginning tomorrow, additional brush units will be staffed to ensure rapid response on high-risk days.

While crews prepare for potential emergencies, officials emphasize that wildfire preparedness begins at home.

Residents are encouraged to create defensible space around their properties by clearing at least 30 feet around their homes, and up to 100 to 200 feet if located near heavy vegetation.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue officials say they are prepared for the heightened wildfire threat and encourage the community to remain vigilant and work together to reduce fire risk.

Fire experts say this buffer zone can significantly increase the likelihood that a home survives a wildfire.

Homeowners are advised to remove ladder fuels, trim low-hanging branches, keep flammable vegetation away from structures, and relocate firewood and propane tanks at least 50 feet from buildings. These measures can reduce the intensity and spread of flames if a fire approaches.

Residents seeking additional guidance can visit the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services website, navigate to Forest and Wildfire, then Firewise USA, to access step-by-step instructions for creating a defensible space around homes.
