BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — While Brevard County’s baseball teams have seen their state championship hopes come to an end, several local softball programs remain in contention as the Florida High School Athletic Association regional semifinals begin Tuesday night.
Among the teams still alive is Eau Gallie, which has dominated throughout the season en route to a 22-3 record.
The Commodores advanced to the Class 4A regional semifinals with a commanding 10-0 victory over Seabreeze in the regional quarterfinals.
Standing in their way is county rival Merritt Island, which enters the matchup with an 11-14 record and comes off an impressive 14-0 road win over Vanguard.
The Mustangs will look to carry that momentum into Tuesday night’s showdown as Eau Gallie continues its pursuit of a state championship after falling just short last season.
Eau Gallie will host Merritt Island in the Class 4A regional semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Eau Gallie High School.
Another Brevard County team still alive is Satellite, which is attempting to continue its postseason run after upsetting No. 3 seed Lake Region 6-5 in the opening round.
The No. 6-seeded Scorpions now face another difficult challenge against No. 2 seed Lake Wales in the regional semifinals.
A victory by Satellite would guarantee at least one Brevard County team a spot in the state semifinals. Satellite is scheduled to face Lake Wales at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lake Wales High School.
Meanwhile, Melbourne enters the regional semifinals as one of the top-ranked teams in the state.
The Bulldogs are ranked No. 8 in Florida and No. 32 nationally while carrying a 26-1 record into Tuesday night’s matchup against Bloomingdale.
Melbourne advanced after defeating Oviedo 2-0 in the regional quarterfinals behind another strong pitching performance.
Bloomingdale also enters the game following a shutout victory after eliminating Viera in the opening round. The Bulldogs will host Bloomingdale at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the regional semifinals.
