BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Groundswell Startups is celebrating the three-year anniversary of its Prototype Lab, a hands-on innovation hub that has become a key driver of early-stage product development and venture growth across Florida’s Space Coast.
Originally launched in 2023, the Prototype Lab was created to remove barriers for founders building physical products by providing access to advanced tools, technical expertise, and rapid prototyping capabilities.
Over the past three years, the lab has evolved into a critical piece of venture development infrastructure supporting more than 50 founders in transforming ideas into functional prototypes and market-ready products.
“Founders shouldn’t have to leave the region to build serious products,” said Marifer Sagastume, Managing Director at Groundswell Startups.
“The Prototype Lab was built to make that possible, to help ideas move from concept to reality faster and more efficiently.”

What began as a fabrication space has grown into a comprehensive product development environment supporting:
● Rapid prototyping and iterative design
● Small-batch production
● Design for manufacturability
● Electronic development and integrated product systems
By enabling faster iteration and local validation, the lab helps founders reduce risk, control costs, and accelerate their path to commercialization.
This approach aligns with Groundswell’s broader mission to strengthen regional innovation by supporting founders at the earliest stages of product development.
Beyond direct founder support, the Prototype Lab has played an active role in advancing the broader innovation ecosystem.
Through the Industry Amplified Intern Program, the lab has hosted more than 25 interns in partnership with local and statewide universities, providing hands-on experience in real-world product development environments.
The lab also supports regional initiatives, such as the Space Coast Initiative, a collaborative effort that connects academia, industry, and grassroots innovation to drive long-term economic diversification.
Additionally, strategic partnerships at the state, national, and global levels have enabled the lab to support increasingly complex startup and product development needs.
At its core, the Prototype Lab is designed to make innovation tangible.
“The real magic isn’t in the machines; it’s in the moment a founder holds their first working prototype and realizes their idea is real,” said Ruchir Gupta, Industrial Designer at the Prototype Lab.
“That shift changes what they believe is possible.”
