BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — With the most active months of the Atlantic hurricane season just weeks away, Brevard County Emergency Management is reminding residents that now is the time to prepare for the possibility of tropical storms and hurricanes.

Although hurricane season officially began on June 1 and continues through Nov. 30, forecasters consistently identify August through October as the period when tropical activity peaks across Florida and the Atlantic Basin.

Emergency management officials encourage residents to have at least seven days’ worth of food, water, medications and essential supplies readily available.

Families should also review evacuation routes, ensure generators are operated safely outdoors, and verify that important documents are stored in waterproof containers or backed up electronically.

Residents living in low-lying areas, manufactured homes or evacuation zones are urged to determine in advance where they will go if evacuation orders are issued.

Pet owners should also include food, medications, leashes and carriers in their emergency plans.

Officials recommend that residents sign up for local emergency alerts and closely monitor forecasts from the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service throughout the season.

Brevard County Emergency Management also reminds residents that preparation extends beyond supplies. Homeowners are encouraged to inspect roofs, trim trees, secure outdoor furniture and review insurance policies before a storm threatens the Space Coast.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has forecast another active Atlantic hurricane season, making early preparation especially important for Florida residents.
