BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a man for driving under the influence after reportedly finding him asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle stopped in the middle of a roadway in Malabar.
According to Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, deputies were patrolling near U.S. 1 and Rocky Point Road when they encountered the stopped vehicle.
Deputies repeatedly knocked on the window in an attempt to wake the driver, identified as Carl Witt.
While trying to get his attention, deputies reportedly noticed an open can of Hurricane High Gravity inside the vehicle.
After Witt exited the vehicle, deputies asked why he had stopped in the roadway. According to Ivey, Witt responded with one word: “alcohol.”
Deputies also noticed blood on the exterior of the vehicle. Authorities later determined that Witt reportedly has a medical condition that causes him to bleed easily.
During their interaction with Witt, deputies reported observing several signs of possible impairment, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and the odor of alcohol.
Witt was asked to participate in field sobriety exercises but declined, allegedly telling deputies, “I’m drunk.”
Deputies subsequently arrested Witt on a charge of driving under the influence.
He later agreed to provide breath samples, which reportedly registered blood-alcohol concentrations of 0.191 and 0.188—more than twice Florida’s legal limit of 0.08.
Witt was booked into the Brevard County Jail.
“If you make the choice to drink, be adult enough to make the choice not to drive,” Ivey said. “Putting lives at risk by making a selfish decision is absolutely ridiculous.”
