Rockledge Police Department Suspends Use of Flock Camera Over Privacy Concerns

BREVARD COUNTY • ROCKLEDGE, FLORIDA – The Rockledge Police Department has suspended its use of Flock camera technology and the associated license plate database amid concerns about citizen privacy.
Rockledge Police Chief Christopher Crawford issued an internal directive ending the department’s use of the system effective Sept. 1.
According to Crawford, the department has used only one mobile Flock camera, deploying it as needed to address crime trends and traffic-related issues. It is the only automatic license plate reader system used by Rockledge Police.
While Crawford acknowledged that the technology can be a powerful law enforcement tool, he said legitimate privacy concerns have recently been raised regarding its use.
The suspension will remain in effect until the Florida Legislature reviews the matter and provides guidance governing the use and deployment of the technology.
“The Rockledge Police Department has always taken our citizen’s privacy seriously,” Crawford said in a statement released Wednesday.
Crawford said Rockledge police officers will continue protecting and serving the community while the department’s use of Flock technology remains suspended.
