Eastern Florida Women Hoops Sophomores Honored During Close Battle With Southwestern Stat

BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — The Eastern Florida State College women’s basketball team lost a close back-and-forth contest with Florida Southwestern State College Wednesday night.

Sophomores Ashleigh BattleE’Zaria AdamsSilvia OtokhaguaNia Santiago and Lynn Rieth all played their final games at Titan Field House on Wednesday and were honored after the game.

The Titans, who are now 10-3 in the Citrus Conference and 18-6 overall, cut the FSW lead to one point with under a minute left but could not beat the Bucs, falling 65-58 at Titan Field House. It was the first time the Titans have lost at home in three seasons.

Down 10 in the middle of the fourth quarter, the Titans went on an 8-0 run cut the Florida Southwestern to two points. Asiana Britt hit a huge 3-pointer with two minutes and 48 seconds left. Jazelle Young and E’Zaria Adams scored and the Titans were within one with 51 seconds left. But the Bucs would score the final six points to pick up the win.

The 15th-ranked Florida Southwestern State College is now 12-1 in the Citrus Conference. It was a game of runs as each team went on multiple long runs in the contest between top 20 teams.

Florida Southwestern went on a 9-0 run to lead 14-8 in the first quarter and continued to lead through most of the second quarter. The Bucs led by 13 points with just less than three minutes left in the second quarter before the Titans finished the second quarter on an 8-0 run.

Trailing by five at halftime, the Titans came out in the third quarter with Tamara Elliot hitting the first 3-pointer of the game for the Titans. Ashleigh Battle hit a 3-pointer and then E’Zaria Adams hit a basket as the Titans took a 32-29 lead early in the third quarter and it was close the remaining of the third quarter, heading to the fourth quarter with a 42-40 lead.

Battle finished with a team-high 15 points while Adams had 13 which gave her more than 500 points in her career at EFSC. Jalei O’Neal finished with 10 points. Britt led all scorers with 20 points for the Bucs.

Eastern Florida State College will travel to St. Petersburg College on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in a conference game.
