BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA—Brevard Public Schools board member John Thomas was a guest speaker at the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral‘s annual Education Luncheon. The event included recognizing the club’s Scholarship winners and Rockledge High School HELM Maritime Studies students.

Thomas represents District 3 on the BPS school board. In his presentation, he highlighted the progress being made and noted that Brevard Public Schools is the 49th largest district in the country and the 10th largest in Florida, with 84 schools and more than 74,300 students.

Positive trends include the district achieving an A-Rating in 2024, higher graduation rates, and improved reading and math scores. He mentioned enhanced security with the installation of Open Gate Weapons Detection Systems in all Brevard high schools.

Some challenges include more work in many schools regarding student reading and math levels, keeping up with the maintenance and repair of aging infrastructure, and funding.

He mentioned two ballot initiatives coming up in 2026 are critical for the Schools: a renewal of the 1-cent sales surtax and a millage referendum. He noted these are even more important to continue infrastructure projects and teacher salaries, among many other needs, with possible funding cuts coming from the state.
