FHP: FATALITIES WERE NOT WEARING SEAT BELTS

Troopers said a 34-year-old Cocoa woman driving a 2020 Toyota Corolla was traveling south in the northbound inside lane of I-95 near mile marker 190 when she struck head-on a 2014 Chevrolet Impala driven by a 34-year-old man from Holly Hill. The Impala’s passenger, a 46-year-old Holly Hill woman, was also in the vehicle.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 south of North Wickham Road claimed three lives and injured several others Saturday in a chain reaction involving eight vehicles, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Cocoa woman driving the wrong way, the Holly Hill man in the Impala, and his passenger were all pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers said the drivers of the two initial vehicles and the Impala’s passenger were not restrained.

The violent collision triggered a series of crashes involving six other vehicles. A 2007 Hyundai Tiburon traveling north struck both the Corolla and the Impala, pushing the Impala into a guardrail.

The Corolla rotated across lanes and became disabled, where it was then hit by a 2015 Honda CR-V, a 2025 Toyota Corolla, and several others as traffic attempted to avoid the wreck.

A 22-year-old Fort Lauderdale man riding in the Hyundai Tiburon and a 63-year-old Palm Bay man driving the Honda CR-V were transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The Tiburon’s driver, a 20-year-old Fort Lauderdale woman, and several others sustained minor injuries and were taken to Viera Hospital.

A 54-year-old Cocoa man driving a Ford Escape was not injured.

Troopers said multiple victims were wearing seatbelts, but the drivers of the two initial vehicles and the Impala’s passenger were not restrained.

The northbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for several hours as investigators documented the scene and emergency crews cleared debris.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation.
