Merritt Island and Heritage Earn big wins in week 3
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Last Friday night was filled with out-of-county games, and some teams showed up, and others just could not get the job done. For many teams, district play starts this week, which also means it’s make-or-break time for teams looking to make a run in the postseason.
*Rankings are based on the previous week’s performance, strength of schedule, and record.
No. 1 – Merritt Island Mustangs (3-0)
Merritt Island pulled off one of the greatest comebacks we have seen in the county over the past couple of years. Down 20-0 on the road at Ponte Vedra, the Mustangs would finally get the horses running winning 45-37. Merritt Island is looking about as good as they can heading into district play.

No. 2 – Eau Gallie Commodores (1-2)
The biggest loss for Eau Gallie was not falling to Seminole 27-13, it was losing rising sophomore, X’Zavier Corbin to injury. The Commodores mentality has always been “next man up,” and with Corbin out they are going to need a big effort from many others. Eau Gallie still has loads of talent, but now is the testing time of how good they are.

No. 3 – Titusville Terriers (2-1)
Titusville hosted a talented Spruce Creek squad last Friday and was challenged to the max. The game went down to the fourth quarter and Spruce Creek made the plays necessary to come out with a 23-14 victory. However, the Terriers looked like a team that can compete in the district and for the top spot in the county as well.

No. 4 – Melbourne Bulldogs (2-1)
Melbourne got back on track in a big way, beating Winter Springs 55-14. This Thursday, they will open up district play at Oviedo; this is a huge momentum game for the Bulldogs if they can pull it off. The Bulldogs were still without starting quarterback CJ Hall last game, so if he does not suit up Thursday, that will make things difficult.

No. 5 – Viera Hawks (2-1)
Normally, after a team loses at home to a 0-2 team, they would move down in the rankings, but Heritage is a lot better than their first two performances showed. Viera’s turnovers killed them as Heritage was able to capitalize on several occasions and ran the ball well. Viera is still in good hands with Crittington at quarterback, but Duke Butler being out was more impactful than one could have imagined.
Next game: Thursday, September 10 @ Lyman
No. 6 – Melbourne Central Catholic Hustlers (2-1)
MCC was looking good, but they finally had their first real test on the road at Bishop Moore. The Hustlers will look to get back on track after their bye as they open district play with Father Lopez. If the Hustlers can get fully healthy, expect them to make a run in the playoffs.

No. 7 – Satellite Scorpions (4-0)
Statically the Scorpions have been the most dominate team in the county. Averaging 40 points a game on offense and giving up less than three points a game on defense, Satellite is on track for their best season ever historically. They will look to keep it going in route to an SSAA state championship potentially.

No. 8 – Heritage Panthers (1-2)
