SIBELIUS The Oceanides
ELGAR  Sea Pictures (Eliza Dopira, soprano)
RACHMANINOFF  Isle of the Dead
DEBUSSY  La mer

Eliza Dopira, soprano

Is there a composer more closely associated with water, or more expressive in describing it, than Claude Debussy?  Debussy returned to the sea again and again in songs and descriptive works for orchestra. Debussy’s La mer demonstrates that the Impressionist movement was not limited to paintings; his soft musical brushstrokes create imaginative and incredible sketches of the sea.  Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead depicts the ghostly ferryman of Greek mythology rowing the souls of the departed to judgment.   A remarkable work of the late Romantic era, it is a richly orchestrated jewel that evokes mystery and reverence.  Soprano, Eliza Dopira joins the orchestra to sing Elgar’s evocative song cycle, Sea Pictures, based on poems evoking fear and fascination with the sea.

Acclaimed Grammy winning pianist, Jeffrey Biegel returns to Central Florida to perform two works with your Space Coast Symphony Orchestra.  Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano created a bonafide hit in the mid 1970’s. Its ingenious fusion of baroque stylings with the jazz idiom was an instant classic and remained in the Billboard Top 40 for ten years.  The SCSO’s principal flautist, Jennifer Grey performs with Biegel, in a masterful arrangement of the acclaimed work.  Biegel will also perform Spiritualist, a concerto in three movements by SCSO favorite collaborator — and recent Grammy winner, Kenneth Fuchs.  Each movement of the memorable concerto was inspired by an abstract painting by American artist, Helen Frankenthaler. The concert will be rounded out with Fuchs’ enthralling Poems of Life, featuring  one of opera’s most exciting stars, countertenor, Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen and SCSO’s principal cellist, Paul Fleury.  Written for countertenor, cello and orchestra, this powerful work is based on the poems of Judith Wolf, a well-known artist and writer.  Wolf’s expressive poems take us on a memorable journey through everyday life, the support of family and friends, the joy of love, and the pain of grief and loss.
