WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Brevard Community College women’s basketball player Shaneece Stephens was one of 40 players who participated in the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s 4th Annual All-Star Weekend from July 13-15 at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville.

Stephens, a rising sophomore and shooting guard from Port St. Lucie, agreed to share her experiences.

Here are the highlights of her trip to the invitation-only event.

July 13:

Today was the first day of position workouts. When we got to the gym the coaches separated the post players and the guards. I guess they did this to select the teams.

The competition here is great.

I was amazed to see the amount of talent that some of these girls have.

They are all positive team players. None of them have bad attitudes or are self-centered.

This is what I hope I get on my future team.

I was placed on Team 1 along with eight other girls. We are down one player but I believe we can compete just fine. Our first practice was good.

We really didn’t have plays. We just played ball.

One out-of-bounds play and a couple of options was all we needed.

Team 1 looks pretty ready for these games.

July 14:

We practiced today at 9 AM. Since we are the first team we had the first practice.

We just went over our offense and ran a couple defensive drills. Nothing too hard.

Our first game is at 4 p.m.

Team 1 played a great game. We were down by at least six at the half and came back in the second half and played great team ball which led to our victory.

I think it was amazing that we played so well together even though we never played with each other before.

That just goes to show the talent everyone has.

July 15:

We didn’t practice this morning. We play at 11 a.m.

We plan on coming out stronger than we did yesterday and to get the lead early in the game.

Right now I’m just in my hotel room with my headphones on getting my mind right to play for these coaches.

Team 1 finished 2-0. We ended up scoring 121 points (estimate) and only allowing 90-something.

It was an honor playing with my team. I would do it all over if I could.

I hurt my back but I didn’t let that prevent me from finishing the game.

Overall I had a successful weekend and enjoyed the event.
