Quality Opponents On List
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Seeking to improve on last season’s 13-18 record, Brevard Community College head women’s basketball coach Renee Bellamy has lined up a challenging schedule for the 2012-13 campaign.
The Titans opens play on Saturday in what Bellamy expects to be a competitive jamboree at Tallahassee Community College. The Southern Conference Jamboree at St. Petersburg follows on Oct. 27.
BCC will play 30 games, 15 of them in the Florida College System Activities Association’s Southern Conference. BCC finished fourth in the six-team conference last season with a 3-7 record. Palm Beach State won the conference with a 10-0 record and advanced to the NJCAA Region VIII/FCSAA Tournament with St. Pete College, which finished 7-3.
Other teams in the conference are Indian River State, Broward College and Miami-Dade.
“I have taken the liberty to make our basketball schedule very tough and competitive, prior to our Southern Conference schedule which starts Jan. 5, for several reasons,” Bellamy said.
“Our goal has always been to make the playoffs and to attend the state tournament; however, this year is much different. We must be in the first or second slot in our conference in order to qualify for the state tournament, so it is imperative that we play ranked, competitive, aggressive and talented teams, which will help us see our true potential.”
“We have been to the playoffs three years in a row and it is our goal and time to get to the state tournament,” she said.
BCC has 12 Melbourne dates including the season’s first home game on the new wood floor on Nov. 6 against Santa Fe Community College of Gainesville. A home schedule highlight is the two-day, six-team Dec. 14-15 Lady Titan Classic tournament with St. Pete College, ASA College of New York City, Shelton State Community College from Tuscaloosa, AL, the College of Central Florida from Ocala and the Brevard Flames adult team.
“They are still competitive and aggressive,” Bellamy said about the Flames. “As you get older, you tend to think smarter, so they have a few tricks up their sleeve when it comes to conditioning. We will not play them in the tournament, but St. Pete and the College of Central Florida will.”
The Titans first conference home game is Jan. 5 against Broward. BCC closes its home season on Feb. 20 against Palm Beach State.
