BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA — This Christmas Eve, the Brevard Humane Society is proud to give the gift of a second chance at life. Twenty-eight dogs that were placed in a high-kill shelter after Hurricane Harvey made landfall, will make their triumphant journey to Cocoa.

This will be the second transport from a Texas-based facility to their Adoption Center as a result of the hurricane.

“These dogs will have escaped possible euthanasia thanks to our new program, Saving Lives, One Ride at a Time,” said Michelle Deaton, Foster and Rescue Coordinator for the Brevard Humane Society.

“Sadly, animals who were once beloved pets prior to the hurricane are now in high-kill shelters, hoping someone will rescue them. We are rescuing as many of these lost or displaced animals as we can.”

Saving Lives, One Ride at a Time was initiated earlier this year after numerous animal shelters and rescue organizations throughout the country began reaching out for help.

The Brevard Humane Society has responded to natural disasters in the past, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Irma in September of this year.

“Unfortunately in these situations time is of the essence,” said Deaton.

“We are fortunate, thanks to the generous donations we’ve received, to be able to make these transports possible.

“It is through our rescue work that we have been able to see first-hand the impact we’ve made in the lives of these animals. It is amazing to see how resilient and special they are, and how much love they can add to your life. We’re so excited to be able to give these dogs a fresh start for the coming year.”

The Brevard Humane Society encourages those contemplating adoption to visit their Cocoa Adoption Center located at 1020 Cox Road in Cocoa.
