BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – With the eighth overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, the Atlanta Braves selected Carter Stewart from Eau Gallie High School.

Stewart, a 6-foot-6 hard-throwing right-handed pitcher was 6-4 this past season for manager Bobby Collins Commodores but it is the potential Stewart possess that attracted the once pitching-rich organization to the Brevard County product.

Stewart throws a mid-90s fastball but it’s his curveball, specifically for his high spin rates, that has drawn all the rave from scouts and the world of baseball.

Alyson Footer of MLB.com recently said,”Stewart is considered to have one of the best curveballs — if not the best — of all pitchers projected to be early selections in the Draft this year. Its spin rate, unsurprisingly, has been labeled as “elite,” reaching levels that rival some Major League pitchers.

Commodores skipper Bobby Collins recently told me that Stewart’s spin ratio on his breaking ball is higher than any spin ratio of any pitcher in major league baseball at the moment. It is the classic fall off the table breaking ball that many big leaguers can only dream of throwing and Stewart does it at age 18.

Stewart was in attendance tonight at MLB’s Secaucus, New Jersey studios.

The Braves pick was announced by Luke Terry, a one-armed catcher that just completed his freshman year of high school baseball in Marshall County Tennessee.

Stewarts mom could be heard yelling joyfully upon hearing Carter’s name announced. Stewart is committed to play college baseball at Mississippi State should he decide not to sign a professional contract.

The assigned dollar amount for the eight overall pick in 2018 is $4,980,700 according to MLB.com. Decisions-decisions.
