BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Downtown Melbourne began a new chapter in its history on Friday with the formal groundbreaking ceremony for the Highline Urban Apartments building at 635 E. New Haven Avenue.
Speakers for the groundbreaking event included Kathy Meehan, Mayor of the City of Melbourne; Mike McNeese, City Manager; and Sam Zimmerman, President of Zimmerman Development.
“The City of Melbourne, led by its government leaders and Community Redevelopment Agency, played a key role in developing the Highline through the use of a Public Private Partnership program which was finalized in 2017 and which provided the necessary support for the nearly four-year effort to come to fruition,” said Suzanne Zimmerman.
The economic and social benefits are expected to be transformational for the area.
The 8-story, 262,200 square-foot mixed-use building is projected to be completed in the first quarter of 2020, when its first residents will enjoy the convenience and excitement of living in the heart of the historic downtown.
The building also will feature Class A commercial, retail, and restaurant space, adding to the vitality and excitement of the existing urban streetscape.
The Highline will feature 171 studio, one, and two bedroom apartment homes with a sophisticated urban design, and all will have large windows, 9-foot ceilings, state of the art kitchens, front-load washers and dryers, and balconies.
Most will enjoy water views. Amenities include a second-floor pool deck, outdoor kitchen, and fire pit. Residents will also enjoy a billiard room, dedicated yoga/pilates room, complete fitness facilities, and a bar and community kitchen. Access controlled parking will be available on the first and second floors of the building.
Designed with the goal of energy efficiency, the Highline will be certified under the National Green Multifamily Building standard.
Zimmerman Development’s acquisition in 2016 of approx. 1.3 acres at the former Old Melbourne High School offered the extraordinary opportunity to work with the City of Melbourne, The Henegar Center, Melbourne Main Street, and other significant business and community stakeholders to reinvigorate the Historic Downtown with 24-hour residential housing and a state-of-the-art building project.
The architect for the building project is Caribeno Architecture Group, Inc. of Melbourne and the construction company is Winter Park Construction of Maitland, Florida.
