BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Commission during its regular meeting on Tuesday voted 3-1 in favor to fund Brevard Zoo’s Indian River Lagoon Conservation Campus & Aquarium to be built on Port Canaveral property.

John Tobia was the lone dissenting vote, with  Rita Pritchett, Curt Smith and  Jim Barfield voting yes. Kristine Isnardi was not present.

The funding of $10 million will come from the Brevard County’s Tourist Development Tax (Resort Tax), a 5 percent tax on the total rental amount collected from every person or other party who rents, leases, or lets for consideration living quarters or accommodation in any hotel, apartment hotel, motel, resort motel, apartment, apartment motel, rooming house, mobile home park, recreational vehicle park, or condominiums for a period of 6 months or less.

This tax, which is projected to generate $15 million this year, is collected by the Brevard County Tax Collector and is in addition to the 7 percent State of Florida Sales and Use Tax remitted to the Florida Department of Revenue.

The aquarium project is estimated to have a total price tag of $70 million.

Brevard Zoo Executive Director Keith Winsten said the balance of the funding would come from state sources, as well as corporate and private donations. An additional $30 million will come from debt financing by the zoo.
