ORLANDO, FLORIDA – The Florida Tech cheerleading team finds itself on top of the world – literally – as the Panthers have won championships in three events at the 2020 International Cheer Union University World Championships.

The ICU World Cup was held Jan. 17-19 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resorts.

Guided by head coach Alexa Sumner, the cheer program experienced its greatest success in national or international competition this weekend as the Panthers claimed a world title in the Elite Small Coed Team Cheer, Dance Team and the Dance Team Pom Doubles competitions.

“I am so excited for our teams,” exclaimed Sumner.

“Their hard work and dedication have really paid off and we are so proud to bring cheer and dance championships to Florida Tech!”

Florida Tech was selected by USA Cheer from hundreds of teams around the country to represent the United States in the three events.

The Crimson & Gray made the most of the opportunity by not only winning the three events but also taking third overall in the Grand Championship Final Standings.

The Panthers took No. 1 in the Elite Small Coed Team Cheer division, out-lasting second-place Tecnologico de Monterrey-Borregos of Mexico.

Tech placed first in the Dance Team event before raking in the final trophy in the Dance Team Poms Doubles.

The Panthers outperformed six other teams from around the world to win the Poms championship, including besting Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras and Wuhan Technology and Business University (China) finished, who finished second and third overall in the competition.
