BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – A dozen volunteers from Canaveral Port Ministry brought a message of love, hope, and faith to crew members aboard the Norwegian Breakaway at Cruise Terminal 10.

Bearing banners and balloons, volunteers gathered near the cruise ship on May 1 for a “Love Wave,” shouting best wishes and messages of spiritual encouragement to crew members who gathered along the railings and at their stateroom balconies to listen, cheer, and wave back.

Volunteer Linda Cochran of Canaveral Port Ministry said the nonprofit ministry organized the morale boosting event because crew members could not disembark the Breakaway due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event came together after Cochran made contact with a Breakaway crew member from Slovakia.

“You saw today how many came out and appreciate America our caring,” Cochran said.

Founded in 1997, the ministry aims to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of international crew members who visit the Port.

Part of the Brevard Baptist Association, the ministry has six staffers and more than 90 volunteers.

Its hospitality center located at 8907 N. Atlantic Avenue is a place where crew members can relax, read Bibles in 70 languages, attend chapel services, enjoy lunch, and connect with their families through free Wi-Fi. “It’s a home away from home for them,” Cochran said.

The Breakaway eventually left the Port, headed for Barcelona, Spain. But the ministry will continue their “Love Waves” for crew members aboard other cruise ships at the Port.
