BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The American Red Cross Space Coast Chapter has awarded Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation Executive Director Tim Timmermann the prestigious “Heroes Among Us Award” of Excellence for the organization’s rapid response during the pandemic to provide seniors who were isolated at home with much needed food.

In an emergency response to COVID-19, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs asked the Senior Resource Alliance, the Area Agency on Aging, to find a way to increase food assistance for isolated homebound seniors.

“A phone call to Tim Timmerman, a nonprofit partner, started the wheels in motion for a pilot program – Meals of Love – which later became a statewide initiative,” said Rebecca DeLorenzo, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Space Coast Chapter.

The program paid local restaurants CARES ACT money to deliver hot meals to homebound seniors. “Within a month, more than 3,000 seniors were receiving meals. By June, the original program, conceived by Timmerman, reached one million meal deliveries,” concluded DeLorenzo.

Timmerman was honored to receive the Red Cross Award.

“The Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation is dedicated to caring for seniors with Alzheimers through our award-winning Joe’s Club day care program,” said Timmerman.

It was a logical move for us to take that same caring philosophy and put it into action in a way that helped to feed seniors in our community while simultaneously helping restauranteurs who were desperately in need of business. Our organization was very pleased to see a program that we initiated spread throughout Florida.”
