BREVARD COUNTY • PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, FLORIDA – The 39th Rescue Squadron held an assumption of command ceremony on Feb. 6 as Col. Brian Diehl, 920th Operations Group Commander, presented Lt. Col. Paul Golando, 39th Rescue Squadron Commander, with the squadron guidon during an assumption of command ceremony at Patrick Space Force Base.

The new 39th Rescue Squadron commander explained how impressed he is with the unit’s cohesion and abilities.

“So far I’ve seen a great group of people who are continuing to hack the mission. We will, I’m certain, be ready for whatever challenges America needs us to overcome,” said Lt. Col. Golando.

The 39th Rescue Squadron supports the 920th Rescue Wing’s primary mission to plan, lead, and conduct military rescue operations and missions. It is the fixed-wing component of a combined arms team that includes six HC-130J aircraft.

The assumption of command is a military tradition that formally signifies the transfer of responsibility from one commanding officer to another, symbolized through the passing of a guidon.

Based at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida, the 920th Rescue Wing is the only Air Force Reserve Command unit that trains and equips Airmen to plan, lead, and conduct military rescue operations and missions to deny competitors and adversaries exploitation of isolated personnel.
