Melbourne Police Department to Host Annual Kids Fishing Camp at Ballard Park Oct. 1

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne Police Department will be putting on its third annual Kids Fishing Camp Saturday, Oct. 1. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ballard Park. Kids between the ages of 5 to 15 will get to enjoy some fun in the sun and fish with an officer.

The Melbourne Police Department Kid’s Fishing Clinic is an opportunity to bring the community together in an effort to promote the outdoors as well as the unique ecosystem that is the Indian River Lagoon.

As well as to inspire children to take up a hobby that involves the outdoors while participating in the following learning environments:

■ Knot tying which includes safety and how-to tie an improved clinch knot and uni-knot.

■ Tackle station that explains rods and reels, what should be in your tackle box, first aid and sun protection, regulations, and hats and sunglasses for safety.

■ Good Angler-conservation topics to include regulations, habitat preservation, catch and release and police your trash.

■ Where Fish Live- fish habitat, what fish eat, what happens if we lose that habitat, and respect all wildlife.

■ Casting- be aware of your surroundings, casting instruction and demonstration, cast into hula-hoops, and proper handling while to and from fishing areas.
