BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne City Council members presented Melbourne Police Chief Gillespie and his Command Staff with a proclamation in honor of police officers who are currently serving and those police officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice and were killed in the line of duty.

May 12 through 18 is National Police Week and May 15 is National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

On October 17, 1986, Melbourne Police Officer Joseph S. Pellicano was killed in the line of duty. His widow, Marion Ambrose, was an honored guest for the proclamation presentation.

Officer Joseph Pellicano was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Sarno Road. He was directing traffic at the site of an early morning house fire when he was struck by a pickup truck.

He was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officer Pellicano had been with the Melbourne Police Department for three years and previously served as an auxiliary policeman in New York City. He was survived by his wife, son, mother, two brothers, and sister.

The Melbourne City Council named the new police headquarters in honor of Officer Joseph Pellicano, who is the only member of the Melbourne Police Department to have been killed in the line of duty.
