POLICE: Palm Bay Woman Killed in Domestic Incident, Suspect in Critical Condition After Opening Fire on Police

Palm Bay Police officials responded to a 911 phone call at approximately 9:10 a.m. regarding a suspicious incident. Officers arrived on scene at approximately 9:13 a.m. and shortly thereafter, heard a gunshot from within the residence.

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – A  29-year-old convicted felon suspected of killing a woman in Palm Bay is in critical condition after a shoot-out with Palm Bay police officers.

According to Palm Bay Police Public Information Officer Lt. Virginia Kilmer, Palm Bay Police officers responded to a 911 phone call at approximately 9:10 a.m. regarding a suspicious incident.

“Officers arrived on scene at approximately 9:13 a.m. and shortly thereafter, heard a gunshot from within the residence,” said Lt. Kilmer.

“The suspect exited the residence, shot at our officers, and gunfire was exchanged at approximately 9:18 a.m. The suspect then fled through the neighboring houses and a perimeter was established. After an extensive search, the Brevard County Aviation Unit was able to locate the suspect nearby, with injuries.”

Lt. Kilmer said the gunman was airlifted to a local trauma center and is in critical condition.

“A female victim was located, deceased, inside the residence where the suspect was seen exiting and preliminary investigation suggests this incident was domestic in nature,” said Lt. Kilmer.

Lt. Kilmer identified the the suspect is identified as 29-year-old, Joseph Fleming. He is a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history.

According to officials, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is on the scene and will be investigating this incident.

“Our involved officers will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure,” said Lt. Kilmer.

“The Palm Bay Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the families, as they endure this tragic event. We extend our gratitude to our partners at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, the West Melbourne Police Department, and Palm Bay Fire Rescue for their assistance,” Said Palm Bay Police Chief Mario Augello.
