Florida Tech to Cancel Classes Starting Tuesday, Students Encouraged to Shelter in Place as Hurricane Milton Expected Midweek

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – As Hurricane Milton heads toward Florida and a midweek arrival, Florida Tech President John Nicklow announced that the university will modify operations starting at 12 noon Tuesday.
University residence halls will remain open throughout the week. The current expectation is that residential students will shelter in place.
Normal operations are planned, and all classes will meet as scheduled Monday, Oct. 7 and Tuesday morning, Oct. 8.
Classes are canceled beginning at noon Tuesday, Oct. 8 so members of the campus community may prepare for the storm. Classes are canceled all day Wednesday, Oct. 9. Classes are canceled Thursday, Oct. 10, at least until noon.
Classes are scheduled to resume virtually at noon Thursday, Oct. 10. Classes will be delivered virtually Thursday afternoon and all day Friday, Oct. 11.
University offices will close beginning noon Tuesday, Oct. 8 and remain closed Wednesday, Oct. 9. Offices are anticipated to re-open at noon Thursday, Oct. 10.
University events are canceled beginning Tuesday, Oct. 8 at noon and tentatively set to resume Thursday afternoon, Oct. 10.
These arrangements are being announced with as much advanced notice as possible as students may have out of town plans with Fall Break scheduled Oct. 14-15.
As of 1 p.m. today, Milton has strengthened into a Category 1 Hurricane, with max sustained winds of 80 mph. Milton is still forecast to intensify into a major hurricane early this week and remain a major hurricane as it approaches the west coast of Florida midweek.
Hurricane and storm surge watches could be issued as early as late Sunday for Florida as Milton is about 800 miles west-southwest of Tampa according to NHC’s 1 p.m. update on Sunday.
Currently, the storm has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and is moving east-southeast at 6 mph and is expected to gain hurricane status Sunday nigh,t and a major hurricane status on late Monday, according to the NHC.

On the Space Coast, rainfall amounts of 6 to 8 inches are forecast and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 51 counties ahead of Milton’s landfall on the Florida west coast Wednesday morning.
