Cocoa Police K9 Units Assist in Capturing Suspect Who Threatened Firefighters with Gun

James Cartwright, 28, faces four counts of aggravated assault

A firearm was recovered from 28-year-old James Cartwright, who is facing four counts of aggravated assault on a firefighter.

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Four Cocoa firefighters were threatened by a man with a gun immediately after they treated him for seizures late Wednesday evening and then fled the area following the incident.

According to a Cocoa police spokesperson, patrol officers from the Charlie-Delta relief squad and Delta Squad responded, including K9 Draco with Officer Cierra Johnson and K9 Kyra with Officer Brian Delos Santos.

“K-9 Draco tracked the area around the incident on G-Street and conducted an article search,” said a Cocoa police spokesperson.

“The suspect was not located. Witnesses later said the suspect was last seen in Rockledge and was causing a disturbance at a local restaurant.”

According to a Cocoa police spokesperson, the witnesses said the suspect was possibly hiding in the bathroom at Arby’s restaurant on U.S. 1. K-9 Kyra and Officer Delos Santos, with assistance from Rockledge Police and Cocoa Delta Squad Patrol officers, entered the restaurant, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The firearm was recovered from 28-year-old James Cartwright, who is facing four counts of aggravated assault on a firefighter. He is being held in the Brevard County Detention Center.
