Extreme Drought Grips Parts of East Central Florida, Rainfall Below Normal Since January New Data Shows

BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — A new drought update issued by the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Melbourne paints a concerning picture for East Central Florida, where conditions have continued to deteriorate over recent weeks.

The most alarming development is the emergence of Extreme Drought conditions in northern Lake and Volusia counties. This is a significant escalation, marking the most severe level of drought reported in the region so far this year. The update notes that across the region, drought and abnormally dry conditions are continuing to slowly worsen.

Since January 1, 2025, most major cities across the region have recorded substantial rainfall deficits:

● Daytona Beach: 4.17” rainfall (▼6.31” below normal)

● Leesburg: 3.36” rainfall (▼6.03” below normal)

● Sanford: 3.99” rainfall (▼5.32” below normal)

● Orlando Intl: 4.02” rainfall (▼5.52” below normal)

● Melbourne: 5.16” rainfall (▼3.87” below normal)

● Vero Beach: 8.91” rainfall (▼1.83” below normal)

● Fort Pierce: 10.25” rainfall (▲0.04” above normal)

The data shows that the northern and interior portions of the region are experiencing the most severe shortages, while coastal cities like Fort Pierce have managed to stay closer to normal rainfall levels.

Outlook and Forecast

Looking ahead, the forecast suggests a possible reprieve with near to slightly above normal rainfall expected in early May. However, officials caution that drought conditions are expected to persist over the next month.
