National Hurricane Center: Chantal Moves Northbound Inland, Recedes to Tropical Depression

Surf and rip-current conditions still have the potential to be life threatening in Florida

(NHC) – The National Hurricane Center has updated Chantal, a storm system moving in the South Atlantic Coast area. Previously categorized as a tropical storm, Chantal is now a tropical depression.
The storm formed last week as a tropical depression of the eastern coast of the southern states. Conditions favored an increase in activity. As wind speeds increased, the depression was named Tropical Storm Chantal.

NHC has monitored the storm for potential increases in power and hazards in recent days. Chantal progressed Northwesterly and moved inland into North Carolina, where it lost some wind speed and was reduced back to a tropical depression.
Chantal has the potential to cause flash flooding in central North Carolina and South-central Virginia. Surf and rip current conditions still pose a life-threatening risk from Florida to the Mid-Atlantic States.
