BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Junior catcher for the Melbourne Bulldogs softball team, Layna Ayala, commits to FSU to continue playing softball and her education.
Last year, as a Sophomore, Ayala was the Space Coast Daily Softball player of the year for the Breakfast of Champions ceremony.
Ayala still has two more seasons of high school softball ahead of her, but she’s already been sought out by many top colleges around the country.
Last year as a Sophomore, Ayala led the Bulldogs, batting .495 with 16 home runs and 46 batted in. She will look to follow up a terrific year with some more stellar play, furthermore hoping to lead the Bulldogs to the state playoffs.
Ayala is the second Bulldog to be heading to Tallahassee over the past couple of years, as All-American pitcher Jazzy Francis just finished her Freshman season with the Seminoles.
Over her career, Layna Ayala has totaled 22 home runs and 68 RBIs while batting .465. Those stats put her amongst the top players in the state, and even nationally.
Ayala attended many camps this off-season, but Florida State felt most like home. With still two seasons left, she will not sign just yet, and many colleges will continue to call. Being a catcher is one of the most sought-after positions, as the pitcher-catcher duo is essential to any team.
