BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard Zoo has welcomed three new additions to its animal family, introducing capybaras Luna, Tupi, and Ginny to guests and staff.

Luna is the mother of social media favorite Tupi and the sister of Ginny. The trio recently arrived from the San Antonio Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, which helps protect species facing threats such as hunting and deforestation in the wild.

Native to South America, capybaras are the largest rodent species in the world, with adults weighing up to 170 pounds. The semiaquatic animals are well adapted to both land and water environments, something Zoo officials say is already evident as the trio has been seen enjoying their habitat pools.

The Brevard Zoo has previously cared for capybaras, including Calypso, the first animal resident in the Rainforest Revealed loop, and later Biggie. While both animals have since passed, Zoo staff say they are excited to reintroduce the species with Luna, 4, Tupi, 1, and Ginny, 4.

Officials report the capybaras are settling in well, spending their days grazing on leafy greens, swimming and acclimating to their habitat-mates, including coscoroba swans Tuba and Trumpet and Baird’s tapir Mia.
