BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA — Titusville Police have filed additional charges against a 42-year-old man in connection with a February shooting that narrowly missed an innocent resident leaving for work.
Detectives developed charges against Titusville resident Dwayne Mitchell on Tuesday, August 18, following an investigation into the February 14 shooting in the 3000 block of Buttonwood Drive.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 5:30 a.m. and found a resident who said they heard shots while leaving for work. The resident raised a backpack over their head as they retreated toward their home.
Investigators later found a bullet hole through the backpack. The resident, who police said had no involvement in the incident, was not struck.
Officers recovered 16 shell casings and documented gunfire damage to a home’s garage, a vehicle parked in a driveway and a tree in the yard. Police also found personal items belonging to Mitchell and an additional firearm at the scene.
According to police, forensic testing identified Mitchell’s DNA on the recovered firearm.
Mitchell was arrested June 16 on charges stemming from an unrelated case.
A firearm found in his possession during that arrest was later compared with shell casings recovered from the Buttonwood Drive shooting scene.
Investigators determined it was the firearm used in the February shooting, police said.
Mitchell remains in custody at the Brevard County Detention Center on his previous charges.
The new charges are being held without bond and include:
• Aggravated assault with a firearm
• Possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon
• Shooting or throwing a deadly missile into a dwelling
“This arrest is the result of hard work, dedication, and persistence of our officers, detectives, and staff,” said Sgt. Lauren Watson of the Titusville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Section. “We remain committed to following the evidence and holding those responsible accountable to keep our community safe.”
