BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Palm Bay Police took to social media to remind citizens and motorists about a new school zone speed enforcement program that includes school zone cameras during school hours.

New School Zone Speed Enforcement Program
As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping our children safe, we’re rolling out a new program to enforce speed limits in school zones. Here’s what you need to know:

When does it start?
Enforcement begins early in the first semester, after a 30-day warning period.

Why is this important?

Traffic studies have shown that hundreds of drivers exceed the speed limit by more than 10 mph in school zones every day.
Reducing a motorist’s speed by just 5 mph doubles a child’s chance of survival if struck by a vehicle.

How will it work?

School zone cameras will monitor speeds from 30 minutes before school starts, throughout the school day, to 30 minutes after school ends.
Citations will be issued if you exceed the school zone limit by 11 mph or more. All funds collected go directly into Public Safety programs.

What are the penalties?

Citations are $100 civil infractions, with no points on your license or increases in your insurance.

“Let’s work together to make our school zones safer for everyone,” said Palm Bay Police in a a released statement. “Please drive carefully and obey the posted speed limits. Your cooperation can save lives!”
