Palm Bay Police Officer Injured After Patrol Vehicle Catches Fire near Onyx Drive

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – While responding to address a known homeless encampment located between Onyx Drive NE and the nearby railroad tracks, a Palm Bay Police Department vehicle unexpectedly caught fire, according to police.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:17 p.m., prompting a swift response from emergency services.
The fire spread briefly to adjacent brush, but thanks to rapid containment efforts, no structures in the vicinity sustained damage.
The officer involved in the incident sustained minor injuries while attempting to extinguish the flames.
The cause of the vehicle fire is currently under review.
“The Palm Bay Police Department remains committed to regularly monitoring homeless encampments throughout the city, prioritizing both the safety of the individuals residing in those areas and the surrounding neighborhoods,” said Lt. Virginia Kilmer of the Palm Bay Police Department.
