BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Mechanical engineer, entrepreneur, and innovator Tim Balz has joined the Groundswell Startups Board of Directors.

Balz is the founder and CEO of Kalogon, a company developing intelligent seating technology to help prevent pressure injuries in wheelchair users.

“From building the award-winning Intel Connected Wheelchair and working at SpaceX to growing Kalogon from a home-based startup into a company with a $50 million production facility, Balz embodies the entrepreneurial spirit that Groundswell Startups strives to foster,” said a Groundswell spokesperson.

Having grown Kalogon within the Groundswell community, he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to giving back and supporting fellow founders.

We are thrilled to have his leadership, experience, and vision helping guide the next chapter of Groundswell.

Balz, a Brevard County entrepreneur whose work spans aerospace innovation and medical technology, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Groundswell Startups, bringing firsthand startup experience and industry leadership to the organization’s mission of supporting emerging companies.

Balz is the founder and chief executive officer of Kalogon, a company focused on developing intelligent seating technology designed to help prevent pressure injuries among wheelchair users.

Under his leadership, Kalogon has grown from a small startup into a rapidly expanding medical technology company with a $50 million production facility.

Groundswell officials said Balz’s appointment reflects both his entrepreneurial achievements and his longstanding commitment to supporting fellow innovators within the startup ecosystem.

“From building the award-winning Intel Connected Wheelchair and working at SpaceX to growing Kalogon from a home-based startup into a company with a $50 million production facility, Balz embodies the entrepreneurial spirit that Groundswell Startups strives to foster,” a Groundswell spokesperson said.

Before launching Kalogon, Balz built a reputation as an innovator in assistive technology and engineering.

His work on the Intel Connected Wheelchair earned national recognition for integrating advanced technology into mobility solutions to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

He also gained valuable experience working at SpaceX, where he contributed to projects in one of the nation’s most dynamic aerospace environments.

Groundswell leaders noted that Balz’s journey mirrors the path many entrepreneurs hope to follow.

Having developed and expanded Kalogon within the Groundswell startup community, he has remained actively involved in mentoring founders, sharing business insights, and helping emerging companies navigate growth challenges.

“Having grown Kalogon within the Groundswell community, Tim has consistently demonstrated a commitment to giving back and supporting fellow founders,” the organization said in a statement.

“We are thrilled to have his leadership, experience, and vision helping guide the next chapter of Groundswell.”

As a board member, Balz is expected to help shape the organization’s strategic direction, strengthen support programs for startups, and expand opportunities for entrepreneurs across Florida’s Space Coast and beyond.

Groundswell Startups serves as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, providing mentorship, resources, networking opportunities, and business development support for early-stage companies.

The addition of Balz to its board comes as the organization continues to grow its role in fostering new businesses and strengthening the region’s innovation economy.

For Balz, the appointment represents an opportunity to help the next generation of founders build successful companies while contributing to the continued growth of the entrepreneurial community that helped launch his own business.
