BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – With a flurry of activity and an official 10 a.m. “go-time” rapidly approaching, dozens of physicians, nurses, leaders, and associates gathered for a quick ceremonial ribbon-cutting on the hospital’s fifth floor to celebrate the official opening of Viera Hospital’s fifth-floor expansion.

Today’s brief celebration not only welcomed the opening of 20 much-needed patient beds for the community – but also ushered in the future of patient care in Brevard County unveiling the new “smart room” technology – which will ultimately expand to all four Health First hospitals.

The expansion marks an exciting new chapter for Viera Hospital and delivers on a promise made to Viera and central Brevard – a commitment to grow alongside our community and ensure high-quality care remains close to home.

The project transforms previously shelled space on the fifth floor, adding 20 inpatient beds and increasing Viera Hospital’s capacity from 98 to 118 beds.

The expansion includes:

•   Four additional rooms dedicated to maternal recovery and postpartum care following delivery, providing additional capacity to care for mothers and babies.

•   Two additional OB Emergency Department triage bays.

•   A new 16-bed Surgical Unit supporting pre- and post-surgical patients and the continued growth of our surgical, orthopedic, and Joint Center programs.

•   New smart room technology designed to enhance communication and connectivity between our patients and caregivers.

The Viera Hospital expansion has been part of Health First’s long-term strategy to prepare for the continued growth of Viera and Central Brevard. Its completion, however, comes at an especially important time for the community we serve.

“Following the closure of Orlando Health Rockledge Hospital, Health First moved swiftly to accelerate our growth plans, expand capacity, and strengthen services to help ensure our North Brevard neighbors continued to have access to the hospital care they need, close to home,” said Viera Hospital President MaryJo Allen.

“Here at Viera Hospital, we have experienced that changing healthcare landscape firsthand. We’ve welcomed more patients, adapted to increased demand, supported one another through change, and continued to provide exceptional care through it all,” Allen continued.

The addition of these 20 beds provides much-needed capacity and complements other changes underway across Viera Hospital to improve patient flow and ensure patients receive the right level of care at the right time.

The fifth-floor expansion is one part of a much larger investment underway at the Viera campus.

Health First is also advancing plans for a new patient tower and ambulatory surgery center focused on orthopedic and spine excellence, continuing our commitment to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our community for years to come.

“To our entire Viera Hospital team: thank you. Thank you for your flexibility, your teamwork, and, most importantly, the compassion and commitment you continue to show our patients, their families, and one another,” said Allen.

“The beautiful new space we opened today is something to celebrate. But what matters most is what will happen within it — the patients who will receive care, the families who will be supported, and the caregivers who will be there for them. And we’re just getting started.”
