BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — George Wendt, best known for his role as Norm Peterson on the iconic television sitcom Cheers, died at 76.

He passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on May 20, 2025, coinciding with the 32nd anniversary of the Cheers series finale.

George Robert Wendt Jr. was born on October 17, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, one of nine children in a large Irish-German family. After an early academic challenge at the University of Notre Dame, he transferred and earned an economics degree from Rockhurst College.

He launched his comedy and acting career with Chicago’s famed Second City improv troupe, where he met his future wife, actress Bernadette Birkett.

Wendt’s major career breakthrough came in 1982 when he played Norm Peterson on NBC’s Cheers. He appeared in all 275 series episodes, which ran for 11 seasons until 1993.

His portrayal earned him six consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. His character became a cultural icon, known for his consistent presence at the neighborhood bar and strong rapport with fellow cast members.

His film credits included appearances in Fletch, Forever Young, and The Little Rascals. He notably played Edna Turnblad in the Broadway musical Hairspray and took on seasonal roles such as Santa Claus in various productions.

In his personal life, Wendt was married to Bernadette Birkett for over forty years and had three children together. Birkett also lent her voice to the Cheers character of Vera, Norm’s frequently mentioned but unseen wife.

Wendt was also the uncle of actor Jason Sudeikis, highlighting a strong family connection to the entertainment industry.

Known for his down-to-earth demeanor and broad appeal, Wendt was widely respected by colleagues and admired by fans. His portrayal of Norm Peterson remains one of television’s most enduring representations of the affable everyman.
