branches block storm drains, rainwater cannot flow properly

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The City of Melbourne is reminding residents that leaving yard waste on or near storm drains is not only against City code but can also cause serious flooding and property damage.
When grass clippings, leaves, or branches block storm drains, rainwater cannot flow properly through the drainage system, increasing the risk of localized flooding during heavy storms.
Residents are asked to keep yard waste piles at least four feet away from storm drains and other obstructions such as mailboxes, and at least fifteen feet from fire hydrants. Yard waste that is too large to fit into personal containers can be scheduled for bulk pickup to ensure proper collection and disposal.
For bulk yard waste service, residents should contact Waste Management at 321-723-4455 or schedule a pickup online at www.wm.com.
If you have questions or issues regarding yard waste pickup, contact the City of Melbourne ECO Division at 321-608-5080 or email recycle@mlbfl.org.
To report pollution or illegal dumping, including yard waste or trash in storm drains, ditches, or swales, residents can call the City’s stormwater hotline at 321-608-7341.
By keeping storm drains clear and properly managing yard waste, residents help protect their neighborhoods from flooding and maintain the health of local waterways.
